Methylcobalamin is the active coenzyme of vitamin B12. Cyanocobalamin, the most common form of B12 supplement, must first be converted to hydroxocobalamin and then to adenosylcobalamin, which is finally converted to methylcobalamin. Since cyanocobalamin must undergo this thorough conversion process, supplementation with methylcobalamin is optimal because it is the specific form of B12 needed to support the brain and nervous system. In humans, supplementation with high doses of methylcobalamin has been shown to be effective for neurological support in people with degenerative diseases such as paralysis, multiple sclerosis, Bell’s palsy, Lou Gehrig’s disease and degenerative spinal conditions.
